When we moved into this house, I decked out the kitchen in sunflower stuff. Sunflowers are so happy looking, and I’ve always liked yellow in kitchens. After a year and a half of looking at sunflowers, I was over sunflowers and so the idea of a rooster themed kitchen was born.
I figured this being chicken country and all, I should be able to find a lot of stuff for this new rooster themed kitchen but my first time out was a complete bust. I went to 4 or 5 thrift stores, and there was not a rooster in sight. Bummer.

The next time out, the collection finally got started with a rooster lamp we found at a thrift store up the road for a few bucks. When we got it home, I started to inspect the wiring a little more closely, and I discovered burn marks in a cord that had to be 30 years old. Not one to want to burn the house down for the sake of a rooster lamp, I gutted it. And now it stands unfinished on the counter until I can find some kind of knob to screw on top or something. I haven’t worked through the plan yet. I just moved on to something else.
I figured maybe people would get sick of their rooster themed kitchen, so I got on eBay and found a lady in Virginia of all places who decided she’d had enough of rooster and was redecorating her kitchen. I tried to win a few of her items, but all I got was a rooster runner rug and a smaller matching mat. Roosters on the floor? Check.
My mom came to visit last weekend and showed up with these gorgeous rooster salt and pepper shakers which is funny because our salt shaker recently disappeared in a completely unsolved mysteriously-suspect-because-it-did-not-work-properly-and-used-to-tick-off-Guitar-Dude kind of way. *ahem* Not that I’m saying he did anything with it. Anyway, it was convenient because we apparently needed a new salt shaker, and they are cute as can be, too.
I got off work early on Friday, so mom and I hit a couple thrift stores and found this little dude. I don’t know what he’s supposed to do, if anything, but he looks cute on the counter diligently guarding the flour jar.
We love Helen and thankfully so does mom, so went out tooling around Helen on Saturday. I swear my mom had some kind of weird sixth sense that this thing was in this one particular shop. She just knew. So now it hangs in the window above the sink where the sun comes in nice and bright in the mornings. Well, the mornings it isn’t overcast and rainy… which is just about every morning these days because apparently Dahlonega is located in a rain forest. But eventually it will be summer and there will be sun to catch. Until then, at least it’s a nice contrast to the gray, rainy background.
All I need now are some curtains, towels and potholders, and I will have a fully tricked out, rooster themed kitchen. Then I have an excuse to talk to everyone who walks into the kitchen about cocks.
(Hanging head in shame…) Sorry, I had to say it.
What about you? Do you have a specific theme for your kitchen?

No, mine is to small for a theme. Does this mean your hoping for rooster stuff for your big day? Hope you have a great day!
I have the same theme in mine. On top of my fridge is my eclectic collection of roosters that I affectionately refer to as my cock collection. Yep……I just said that!!!
Too bad my visit was over so quick. We might have been able to finish this project up given a few more days! Happy rooster hunting!
